If the number of players can not split evenly into Quads, the six players with the lowest ratings will be asked to play in a three round swiss tournament with the same format.

## Info

The Lakeshore Chess Pacific Crest Round Robin will take place on March 3-6, 2022. Space is limited to 24 people (3 Sections). Players must pre-register to guarantee spot by registering at [lakeshorechess.com](http://lakeshorechess.com/). With round robin tournaments, withdrawals are very problematic for both players and organizers. To discourage last minute withdrawals, there is a $75 deposit that will be returned after all rounds are played. Please only register if you can play all seven rounds.

Time control will be G/90+30 (that’s increments, not delay,) and the tournament will be USCF & FIDE rated.

By filling out this form and paying the registration fee, you secure your spot.

Entry fee is $150 by February 20th, 2021 and $175 until February 25, when registration stops. An additional $75 deposit will be collected, to be returned after the player completes all games. Withdrawing after Feb 25th forfeits the $75 deposit.

**Player Discounts** Players under 21 years old and female players each get a $25 discount from the entry fee. This is stackable, so female juniors get $50 off total. Our location is in the West Loop, on Lake Street between Halsted and Des Plaines. Just east of the highway. Paid street parking is available through the ParkChicago App. There are plenty of parking options on SpotHero for cheaper day rates. We are located about 2 blocks west of the CTA Clinton Station which is accessible by the Green and Pink lines.

## Special Notes

- If, by February 25th, less than 8 players are registered in any section, we will do our best to fill the remaining seats with reserve players. Regardless, each section will proceed as planned as long as at least 4 players are available. The schedule and prizes will be adjusted accordingly, and the arbiter will consult with each affected player to make sure the adjusted format is acceptable to the players. Unfortunately, these are the limitations that come with a round-robin tournament.
- Water and snacks will be provided on-site. We will also coordinate a meal between rounds on Saturday and Sunday so players can relax before the next round instead of finding food.

If you have a medical condition that prevents you from getting the vaccine, a negative test within 72 hours of the start of the tournament will suffice. **Q: I want to attend the tournament and/or lecture, but I’m unable to pay the entry fee. Is there anything I can do?**

A: Absolutely! While we charge for our events so we can pay for the venue, prizes, lecturers, and other costs, we’re here to promote chess in the Chicago community.

There are two ways you can cover your entry for either the tournament or lecture:

1. We allocate 4 entries each for both the weeknight tournament and the lecture for players in need. These slots are assigned on a no questions asked, first-come-first-serve basis, though preference is given to younger (high school and below) players. We will deduct the tournament entry fee from any winnings, though the lecture will be completely free. We only ask two things—first is that you abide by the honor system and make an effort to contribute what you can, even if it’s less than the posted fees, so we can continue to host these events. Second is that you volunteer your efforts to help us set up and coordinate the event, **to the best of your capabilities,** either before, after, or during the event. Lakeshore Chess is teaming up with the Chicago Chess Center to bring you Chess for Ukraine: A Charity Tournament & Simul featuring GM Yaro Zherebukh, GM George Margvelashvili, & IM Eric Rosen. We will kick the day off with a tandem simul with the honored guests, followed by a USCF-rated blitz tournament to end the day. Space is limited to 60 people for the simul and 200 players for the blitz tournament. The tournament will be a 1-section, 7 double-round swiss tournament with blitz (G/3;+2) time controls. The prizes will be entry fee credits to future CCC & Lakeshore Chess events. There will be prizes for both overall placement and best in class (see prizes below.)

All proceeds from the event will directly go to help the situation in Ukraine.

The entrance fee for the simul is $50, $40 for the tournament, or $75 for both the tournament and simul by March 25th. All fees $10 more day of event. All FIDE titled players play free in the tournament.

**UPDATE 3/21** Based on feedback, we updated the beneficiary organizations for the event. All organizations below are non-partisan humanitarian groups, whose objectives are to help anyone regardless of nationality, religion, etc.
Funds will be allocated to the following organizations:

- **[UNICEF](https://www.unicefusa.org/war-ukraine)** has continuously worked since 2014 to address the impacts of conflict in the eastern region of Ukraine. They have scaled their operations since the war broke out and provide healthcare support and other vital infrastructure to those that are displaced, particularly children and women.
- **[HIAS](https://www.hias.org/blog/hias-response-team-poland-assessing-ukrainian-refugee-needs)** is closely monitoring the situation in Ukraine and neighboring countries and is responding with emergency humanitarian assistance to those who are displaced. **Presenter Bio** A fascination with solving puzzles drew me to chess and a love of the game caused me to stay, eventually earning titles of National Master from the United States Chess Federation and FIDE Master from the World Chess Federation. In tournaments, I have finished first in the North American Open U2300 section, tied for second in the World Open U2200 section, and tied for second in the Chicago Class. My current USCF rating is 2365. 

I have been coaching chess for 12 years to individual students ranging from 6-60 and group classes of varying skill levels from beginner to expert. I tend to focus on the transition from opening to middlegame. 

When I am not playing chess, I am a graduate student at Northwestern University in Evanston where I am pursuing a master’s degree in neurobiology. My current research examines the proteins in Alzheimer’s Disease. My past work in cognitive psychology, which focused on the decision-making process, has appeared in professional journals.

A: Absolutely! While we charge for our events so we can pay for the venue, prizes, lecturers, and other costs, we’re here to promote chess in the Chicago community.

There are two ways you can cover your entry for either the tournament or lecture:

1. We allocate 4 entries each for both the weeknight tournament and the lecture for players in need. These slots are assigned on a no questions asked, first-come-first-serve basis, though preference is given to younger (high school and below) players. We will deduct the tournament entry fee from any winnings, though the lecture will be completely free. We only ask two things—first is that you abide by the honor system and make an effort to contribute what you can, even if it’s less than the posted fees, so we can continue to host these events. Second is that you volunteer your efforts to help us set up and coordinate the event, **to the best of your capabilities,** either before, after, or during the event. **Presenter Bio** Arjun Vishnuvardhan is an Indian-American International Master living in the Chicagoland area. At his 15 years of age, in May 2006, he became the National Game-60 Chess Champion of the United States, by beating International Master Edward W. Formanek. This victory over the top International Master made Arjun to become the youngest National Game 60 Champion of the United States. Arjun was born in Kerala, India and started playing chess when he was 8 years old. In 2001, he won the British Junior Under-11 Championship held at Scarborough, United Kingdom.

**Presenter Bio** Arjun Vishnuvardhan is an Indian-American International Master living in the Chicagoland area. At his 15 years of age, in May 2006, he became the National Game-60 Chess Champion of the United States, by beating International Master Edward W. Formanek. This victory over the top International Master made Arjun to become the youngest National Game 60 Champion of the United States. Arjun was born in Kerala, India and started playing chess when he was 8 years old. In 2001, he won the British Junior Under-11 Championship held at Scarborough, United Kingdom.

**Q: I want to bring my child to the lecture; do I have to pay for two entries?**

A: You won’t have to pay for separate entries for you and your child unless you are also an aspiring chess player, in which case, please be honest 😄. However, our capacity is limited so if the space gets tight, we may ask parents to wait elsewhere or find some other solution until everything is finished.

**Q: Will the lecture be recorded so we can review the content later?**

A: Yes! The recorded lecture and accompanying Lichess studies will be available on this page so students can review the content later.

**Q: If the lecture is going to be available for free online, why would I pay to be there?**

A: Interacting and asking questions directly to the lecturer will allow a student to learn topics at a much deeper level. We aim to have a practical portion during our lectures whenever relevant, where students can put their newfound knowledge to use against opponents in real life. Learning a bishop + knight mate will stick a lot better after you can practice it a few times against someone while using a clock! Lastly, this is a prime opportunity to meet and engage with peers in the chess community in an environment where you’re actually encouraged to talk and get to know each other—chess is much more than just a game, it can help you make lifelong friends!

The Lakeshore Chess June Monthly Classical Tournament will take place each Sunday from June 5-26, 2022. Space is limited to 24 people in two sections. Players must pre-register to guarantee spot by registering at [lakeshorechess.com](http://lakeshorechess.com/). The tournament will be a Swiss System tournament with 4 rounds.
Time control will be G/90+30 (that’s increments, not delay,) and the tournament will be USCF-rated.
The entry fee is $60 by May 7, $80 until June 1st, and $100 until June 5th, when registration stops. Players may request up to two half-point byes before round 1, and unlimited 0-point byes.

The Lakeshore Chess 2022 Summer FIDE Round-Robin will take place on July 8-10, 2022. Space is limited to 24 people (4 Sections). Players must pre-register to guarantee spot by registering at [lakeshorechess.com](http://lakeshorechess.com/). With round robin tournaments, withdrawals are very problematic for both players and organizers. To discourage last minute withdrawals, there is a $75 deposit that will be returned after all rounds are played. Please only register if you can play all seven rounds.
Time control will be G/90+30 (that’s increments, not delay,) and the tournament will be USCF & FIDE rated.
By filling out this form and paying the registration fee, you secure your spot.

Entry fee is $140 by May 7th, $180 until June 24th, and $220 until July 1st, when registrations are cut off. An additional $75 deposit will be collected, to be returned after the player completes all games. Withdrawing after July 1st forfeits the $75 deposit.

Lakeshore Chess 2022 Summer FIDE Round-Robin

Lakeshore Chess

## 1. Always get a good night's sleep before the first round. 
This is crucial to playing well. Chess tournaments can last up to twelve hours per day and most professional tournaments are 2-4 days long. A chess match involves being able to stay sharp even five or six hours into a match. Once I heard about a Grand master flagging (making run out of time) a strong master player by playing a dead equal position past 5.5 hours. Even at the advanced levels, having stamina is crucial. 

## 2. Write down your games. 
Writing down your games makes your ability to learn from your mistakes twice as effective. Also, you want to save those games and go over them with a coach. Often, there are mistakes a coach can point out that you may have missed, such as a tactic or checkmate. In addition, writing down your games ensures that one side cannot try to make an illegal move to your disadvantage because you can point to the notation to show exactly what happened. 

## 3. Sit on your hands if you are moving too fast. 
Beginners often move too fast because they want the games to end more quickly. My freshman year of high school, I was playing 4-0 going into the final round of the Fresh-Soph Tournament. My opponent was the only other undefeated person in our division and he played very fast. Moving quickly, he played 1. Bxf2+ (D). Playing quick has a psychological factor. If you move fast, your opponent may think you are confident because they are playing bad moves. However, often beginners will move fast and make mistakes, even ones who are undefeated in a tournament. I confidently took the Bishop and then he played 1...Ng4+ (D) hitting my Bishop. If I played Ke1, he would have played Qxg5, winning a pawn and an attack against my King. After 2. Qxg4! Bxg4 3. Bxd8 Rxd8 I emerged up a piece. I then traded into endgame and used my material advantage to win. I picked up first place in the tournament. If you sit on your hands, you can make sure that you take your time. Here my opponent made a mistake because they moved too fast.


## 4. Chew some Big Red cinnamon gum during the tournament. 
Studies show that cinnamon’s scent can boost memory in a task. However, if you are chewing gum, its important to also remember not to chew loudly. Many people need silence to focus. Making noise at a chess tournament can interfere with a game. Also, if you are observing or playing in a chess tournament, remember to turn your phone on silent. 

## 5. Observe the touch move rule. 
Most tournaments play by the rule, if you touch a piece you have to move it. This is called the touch move rule and it can be hard to remember this at your first tournament. Taking your time will ensure that you don’t touch a piece and then realize you wanted to move a different one. Remember, if you touched a piece and realize the square you were going to move it to will lead to a capture, you can always move it to a different square, as long as that is a legal move and you have not let go of the piece. Once you let go of the piece, the move is made. Some people even play blitz (five-minute-chess) with touch move. 

## 6. Remember to hit the clock. 
Most tournaments play with chess clocks. You also have to hit the clock with the same hand you move the piece with. If you make your move and forget to hit the clock, your opponent does not have to remind you of your mistake. Once I did this in a tournament when I was younger and I only realized a few minutes later on my own. Remember, if you run out of time, you lose! 

## 7. Manage your time evenly. 
If you have an hour to make all of the moves in the game, don’t spend more than a few minutes per move unless it is a complicated position that requires calculation. If you use up all of your time, you’re more likely to make a blunder in the endgame because you will have to move quickly. 

## 8. Never let your face show you made a mistake. 
During my first high school chess match, I played a solid game in the Fried Liver Attack and made it all the way to the endgame. After making a move, I realized I had left my knight “en prise,” meaning undefended or “hanging.” Instead of remaining calm, I threw my hands in the air and then buried my face, giving up. My opponent captured my knight. After the game, my opponent told me that he did not notice my piece was hanging until my expression gave it away. 

## 9. Notify the Tournament Director of your games result. 
The Tournament Director (TD) needs your games result to make the pairings for the next round. Usually there is a scoreboard on the wall where you mark “1” next to your name if you were the winner. If you tied, you mark “.5” next to your name. If you lost, mark a “0” next to your name, and a “1” next to your opponent’s name. 

## 10. Pay attention until the very end of the game. 
Even if you’re winning, make sure you stay vigilant until checkmate. Even positions where one side is clearly winning can result in a stalemate or loss if the winning side blunders. Many people play their first tournament and don’t win a game. There are many extra things to focus on when playing competitive chess, and this makes it difficult to focus on the chess moves and strategy, rather than the squares and hitting the clock each time. However, after time, the use of chess notation becomes easier and doesn’t take as much time. Most importantly, no matter 
what the result, make sure you have fun!
